My life has been a Path to Health. From the age of three, I knew I would become a doctor like my father. That early calling set me on a journey that would take me across countries, world views and disciplines, continually deepening my understanding of health and healing.
Dr. Raoul Goldberg is one of the pioneering figures of integrative medicine in Southern Africa and an internationally recognized authority on participatory healing, anthroposophic medicine, and whole-person healthcare. Born in South Africa, he graduated with his medical and surgery degrees from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1974 and immediately embarked on a journey that would take him far beyond the boundaries of conventional medicine. From 1976 to 1983 he undertook intensive post-graduate training in renowned integrative medical clinics across Switzerland and Germany, including the Klinik Arlesheim, the Lukas Cancer Clinic, the Natural Science Institute at the Goetheanum in Dornach, the Paracelsus Clinic in Germany, and the Friedrich Husemann Psychiatric Clinic in Freiburg, immersing himself in anthroposophic medicine, oncology, pediatrics, nutritional therapy, psychiatry, therapeutic eurythmy, rhythmic massage, and the pharmaceutical manufacture of natural medicines.
Returning to Cape Town in 1983, Dr. Goldberg established what would become Path to Health Center, an integrative medical practice, integrative cancer center, and learning academy that has served the community for over four decades. Over the years he broadened his clinical repertoire through further training in homeopathy at the Boiron Institute (1993–95), acupuncture with Professor de Gelder (1992–93), psychophonetic counseling at Persephone College (2002–05), and functional medicine at the Institute of Functional Medicine in the United States (2010–12). He also served for many years as Medical Consultant to Camphill Villages in the Western Cape and ran a complementary homeopathic clinic in Khayelitsha Township. For 43 years he has been the farm doctor for the workers of Buitenverwachting, a local biodynamic farm, serving three generations of farm workers. Throughout this period he has worked as Medical Consultant and School Doctor for the Waldorf School movement in the Western Cape, a role informed by his deep understanding of child development, temperament, and the formative importance of the first ten years of life.
In 2011 Dr. Goldberg and Dana Smirin co-founded PATH Method, Participatory Awareness for Transformational Healing, a signature integral skill set rooted in Rudolf Steiner's psychosophy and European integrative medical traditions. PATH Method enables healing engagement on three simultaneous levels: intrapersonal, interpersonal, and transpersonal, and functions both as a counseling modality and as a diagnostic tool that surfaces the psychosocial and biographical roots of illness. Grounded in Goethe's participatory theory of knowledge and the insights of Steiner, the method represents Dr. Goldberg's most original contribution to the field of integrative medicine. He has presented and taught PATH Method with Dana Smirin at workshops and conferences across South Africa, the United Kingdom, Europe, and the United States, at the Esalen Institute and the Institute of Noetic Sciences.
Dr. Goldberg is the author of two published books, Awakening to Child Health (Hawthorn Press, UK, 2009) and Addictive Behaviour in Children and Young Adults: The Struggle for Freedom (Floris Books, UK, 2012), and a prolific contributor of articles on integrative medicine, cancer, child development, stress, and participatory healing. A third book, The Trauma You Call Normal, will be published in October 2026. In 2021 he was awarded a PhD in Integral and Transpersonal Psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco, where his doctoral research examined a multifactorial approach to the evaluation and reduction of stress. His academic work complements more than five decades of hands-on clinical practice and a lifelong commitment to evidence-informed, whole-person medicine.
Dr. Goldberg's integrative philosophy holds that true healing addresses the human being as a unity of Body, Soul, and Spirit, shaped by biography and environment. His practice at Path to Health Center draws on conventional medicine, functional medicine, anthroposophic medicine, homeopathy, phytotherapy, European medicine traditions, and PATH Method to create deeply personalized, root-cause-oriented care. He is co-founder of the Anthroposophical Medical Association of Southern Africa and the South African Complementary Medical Association, and a long-standing member of the South African Society of Integrative Medicine and the Institute of Functional Medicine.
